I would say…don’t worry about your cluttered house or weedy yard. If you do, especially if you’re of a certain age, you will never have peeps over. Instead, just do it. Have ‘em bring a produce item that was headed for the compost pile and see what you can resurrect/re-purpose for a satisfying meal, while simultaneously boosting immune systems and reducing waste. Everyone will be focused on staying alive, rather than the dog hair on your couch.

Plenty of terms and ideas have been hijacked by political agendas or reduced to meaningless through common misuse and overuse. Socialist. Right-wing. Nazi. Progressive. In the context of current usage, what do these words even mean?

The Progressive Movement of the late 19th century was rooted in a desire to improve the conditions of tenement housing, child labor, and working women. Divisive issues at the time, but we look back now and think how far we've come. For that, I see the "progress" in "progressive," and like Julie and Benjamin, I see it as altruistic: an awareness that there's always room for improvement and a willingness to work toward it, to move forward in the direction of a better world.

But here's where it gets tricky. MSNBC's current slogan is "Lean Forward." Fox News' slogan is "Move Forward," while CNN's is "Moving Truth Forward." "Forward" is the motto of Wisconsin, a state currently governed by a politician who stripped union workers of collective bargaining rights. And rumor has it that President Obama's 2012 campaign slogan will be (you guessed it!) "Forward."

We all want progress. We just have different ideas about what that looks like.

Where else to go but...forward!

To me, progressive means hearing all sides of an issue, idea or opinion and making an informed decision based on all of those different sides. An enlightened decision that is best for everyone and one that promotes improvement through change.

To me, "progressive" means having an open mind and thinking outside the box. It means being willing to listen and to truly consider ideas and perspectives that challenge your beliefs about how the world works or should work and to engage in a dialogue to reach common ground and solutions.

The dictionary definition:

1. favoring or advocating progress, change, improvement, or reform, as opposed to wishing to maintain things as they are, especially in political matters: a progressive mayor.

2. making progress toward better conditions; employing or advocating more enlightened or liberal ideas, new or experimental methods, etc.: a progressive community.

To me, "progressive" means taking an honest look at what will promote equal access to opportunity, sustainable living and true justice in our community, and fighting for that.
