Urban Ag – Try it On!
A local farm, just minutes from downtown Spokane, provides a chance to “step gently into farming and maybe try it out.” Heron Pond Farms, getting well known for their delicious goat cheese found at a number of local groceries and restaurants, has a house for rent on their property just south of 57th Avenue. A great chance to trial a Live, Farm, Play lifestyle and see if it suits you. Take a quick tour on their Facebook page and you’ll quickly see it’s a beautiful spot with lots of farm activity.
Available mid-March, the house offers gorgeous country living, with 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, and washer and dryer. In addition, it has its own area to try on some decent scale produce farming. Co-owner Shannon Meagher says, “We are open to a reduction in rent for working on our farm as well,” which includes the chance to learn about the animal side of the equation. Their friendly herd of Nubian goats provide the milk for the artisan cheese made by Lorie Arnold. And Shannon raises and sells heritage Large Black hogs.
It’s kidding and piglet time of year. Be careful if you’re one with a weakness for the sky-high cuteness associated with baby animals. And, because they are quite busy with all the young ones, please only contact them if you’re serious about the house rental opportunity.
If you enjoy the idea of more deer than people as neighbors, call the farm to find out more – 509-624-3262. Could be the perfect Home, Sweet Home.
